The I-League is India's second-tier national competition, having been the country's top division from its founding in 2007 until the Indian Super League assumed that status. Clubs contest a single national table and the champion earns promotion to the ISL, which gives the closing weeks a consequence unusual for a second tier. Its historical weight is greater than its current standing suggests: the league carried Indian football's traditional clubs before franchise football reorganised the top of the pyramid, and several of its former champions now play in the division above. Squads are built around a small quota of foreign players alongside domestic professionals, and the clubs draw on regional strongholds in Kerala, Goa, Bengal and the north-east. The season runs through the Indian winter and spring to avoid the monsoon.
