The Scottish Cup, first contested in 1873, is the world's oldest national trophy still being competed for, and its open draw admits clubs from the Highland and Lowland leagues through to the Premiership. Single-elimination ties, small grounds and severe winter conditions have produced a long record of upsets, including some of the most celebrated giant-killings in British football. Celtic lead the honours list, followed by Rangers, though the cup has historically offered clubs outside Glasgow their most realistic route to a major trophy, and several have taken it. The final is staged at Hampden Park. The winner qualifies for European competition, which for a non-Old Firm club represents both a rare continental appearance and a transformative financial return.
